Make a checklist

Before you start

• Nothing beyond a signed-in account.

Steps

1. Start typing with a dash

   In the composer, begin a line with - and the kind switches to Checklist on its own. One line per row.

   Or click Checklist in the picker first, which pins it whatever you type.

2. Name it

   The title box asks you to *Name the list*. A checklist with a name and no rows is perfectly valid — it is how most lists start.

3. Build the rows

   Once it is open in the editor, each row is its own box. Enter adds a row below the one you are on, Backspace on an empty row removes it, and there is an Add item button at the foot for when you would rather click.

   The tick box beside each row works while you are editing too, so a list you are writing up after the fact can be filled in as it goes.

4. Tick things off on the card

   No editor needed. The tick boxes on the card itself are live: clicking one saves straight away, so working through a list is just clicking down it.

What happens next

• The list shows on the board with its rows, and ticked items struck through.
• Checklists are one of the two kinds that can be shared by link, and one of the two that appear in a data export.
• The rail has a Checklists entry under Sack, with a count, if you want only these.

If something goes wrong

Each row is what you see on screen. Symptoms are worded the way the app words them, so the sentence in front of you should be findable on this page.

Enter saved the item instead of adding a row

That is Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter). Plain Enter inside a row box adds a row. If Enter saved, focus was in the title box rather than in a row.

Backspace will not remove the last row

A checklist always keeps one row. Clear its text and leave it — an empty row is not saved as an item.

You want to reorder the rows

Not supported yet. Retyping is the only way today.

You want to turn a note into a checklist

A kind cannot be changed after saving. Copy the text into a new checklist and delete the note.
